Fraudster rips off Department of Rural Development of R60 000

Date:

BHISHOMziyanda Mahlathi (37) appeared before the Zwelitsha Magistrate court on Thursday for fraud, theft and money laundering. This occurred after he was arrested during the same day by the Serious Corruption Investigation unit of the Hawks

The accused was contracted in 2012 by the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform to deliver 70 Jojo tanks from Peddie to Mahlahlane Administration Area in the Butterworth area. It is alleged that he failed to follow procedure as he did not inform the department that he delivered the tanks. It is further alleged that Mahlathi then submitted a fraudulent invoice claiming R60 000 for the service he claims he had rendered. Investigations reveal that he never delivered the tanks.

Mahlathi received R2000 bail and he next court appearance is on 3 November 2017.
