The battle to hurdle the West Beach breakers

Family members, friends, seconds and race organisers watched in hope and sympathy as paddlers in the PE2EL (Port Elizabeth to East London) Surfski Challenge battled to clear the breakers at Port Alfred’s West Beach on the second day of the race, known as one of the world’s toughest and longest ocean races, covering distances of up to 80km a day over four days.
