Shotokan master to hold seminar in Port Elizabeth

Local karateka stand to benefit from the wisdom of a Shotokan master when André Bertel Sensei visits Port Elizabeth for his second South African Seminar on March 2 and 3.

This is Bertel’s second visit to South Africa and he is being hosted by United Shotokan-Ryu (USR).

CONTEMPORARY MASTER: André Bertel Sensei, a New Zealander now living in Japan, will hold a seminar for South African Shotokan karateka in Port Elizabeth this weekend

The seminar, which will take place at the Fairview Sports Centre in Port Elizabeth, will be structured into four two-hour sessions. The seminar is open to all Shotokan karate practitioners (irrespective of affiliation) age 14 and older, who hold the level of green belt (6th kyu) or higher.

Organiser and USR chairman Gary Grapentin said, as Bertel only accepts a limited number of annual international invitations, his visit to South Africa was a major coup for South African Shotokan Karateka.

There are already bookings for the seminar from across South Africa, but there were still a few places available which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Members of the public are requested to note that the seminar is closed to spectators.

Grapentin may be contacted at for further information.
