Cricket fever was in full swing on the Port Alfred hospital field on Saturday July 13 when the newly established Nemato Cricket Academy held their ‘World Cup’ final involving four township schools.
Each school represented a country on the day, with Port Alfred Primêre Skool being kitted as South Africa, Dambuza Primary School as Australia, Kuyasa Combined School as England, and Mtyobo Primary School as India.
There was a celebratory atmosphere as Dambuza drum majorettes led the procession of teams onto the field.
Performing better than the Proteas, Port Alfred Primêre Skool won the victor’s cup as South Africa.
Initiated and sponsored by the Nemato Foundation, the cricket academy is part of a long term plan to get schools in the townships to play cricket.
“The ‘World Cup’ was the launch of our schools league,” coach Nkosana Mguwe said.
“During our world cup we also identified 15 boys who will become our academy team (high performance). These will receive a more advanced training program as they will compete with other elite cricket playing schools from Grahamstown, mainly Graeme College who are our enabling partners,” Mguwe said.
“Through this partnership our players will get opportunities to participate in trials and also be identified for bursaries into Graeme College.”
The tournament started as a semi-final between the four schools. In the first semi-final on July 10, Kuyasa played against Dambuza. Dambuza won the match by 28 runs to qualify for the finals.
In the second semi-final on July 11, Port Alfred Primêre played against Mtyobo. Port Alfred Primêre won by 11 runs to qualify for finals
Playing for third place on Saturday morning, Mtyobo faced off against Kuyasa. Mtyobo won that match by 66 runs.
