Workers lead the chase helping police and security nab the suspect
Fast-acting staff at a beachfront complex helped security and police nab a suspected rapist in the dune bush near West Beach on Monday afternoon.
Louis Oosthuizen of Sky Alarms said Sky armed response was first alerted to a report of a man grabbing a cellphone on the beachfront at about 1.10pm.
He said general workers at Kowie River Chalets had witnessed the incident and given chase. Sky armed response arrived and also began searching for the man in the bush.
“We phoned the police and the dog unit and they also joined the search,” Oosthuizen said.
“While we were searching, a young girl, I estimate to be between 18-20, came out of the bush and said she’d been raped. We had no idea of this at the time – just about the cellphone being grabbed
The girl, 18, was taken to A Villa de Mer guesthouse to wait for an ambulance. She is from Germany and was volunteering at Port Alfred High School.
The alleged rapist was caught after an hour of surrounding and searching the thick bush.
The suspect is due to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court later this week.
