An alert for parents with children at Alexandria High School. At a parents meeting this evening it was decided to lock the school gates tomorrow (Wednesday February 19) as a sign of protest against teacher shortages and huge class sizes, and to compel the Eastern Cape education department to attend to the pressing problem.

Parent Neil Wentzel informed Talk of the Town of the decision tonight. He said the parents had made the original resolution at a meeting last week through the school governing body that they would lock the gates if an education department representative did not meet with them. When no representative showed up, they decided to go ahead with the resolution.

Wentzel said one class had 90 pupils in it, and another had 68. “How can children be properly educated in that environment?”

There have been similar problems at Alexandria High School in the past.

Talk of the Town will report on any updates.
