LET’S DO THIS: Damant Lodge residents Lynn Callaghan and Maureen Moffatt stand alongside one of their favourites, a Classic MG before their joy ride outing on Saturday. Picture: MARK CARRELS

The Albany Vintage and Classic Motor Club put some extra “va va voom” in to the lives of elderly folk of Damant Lodge Retirement Home by taking them on a fun ride through Port Alfred streets in their vintage car collectors’ items on Saturday.

Excitement – and expectation – were palpable as the elderly ladies of Damant Lodge were right on time when their rides pitched after leaving inconvoy from the Albany Vintage Car Museum in Alfred Road.

Merinda Riddin waxed lyrical about how desperate she was to be taken for a ride in a ruby red classic MG, while friend, Lyn Callaghan,  slid in to the passenger seat of an eye-catching black open top jaguar. From there the convoy took a route via Atherstone, past the Highlander, winding its way on to Gleneagles and on to West Beach.

Later on the convoy stopped at the Vintage Car Museum to treat the ladies to a cup of tea or a cold beverage and snacks before the excited group with a story to tell in the bag were taken back to Damant. Club chair Dean Wallace said they did car-related official club events at least once a month, which included Settlers Park and Damant Lodge. “It’s a community project and they absolutely love it.”
