Girls receive sanitary products to help with School absenteeism

THE girls of Port Alfred Primere Skool in Station Hill received a gift of sanitary products on Friday to assist them to attend school even during menstruation.

According to school teachers throughout the country, absenteeism is a major problem during this time for many girls who cannot afford to purchase sanitary products and therefore cannot attend classes.

According to Tina Hon, some schools have experienced more than an 80% decrease in the absenteeism rate when girls have been helped to restore dignity with the provision of sanitary products.

Rotary E Club’s Hans and Tina Hon handed out the products. This was the second school they have visited in a seven-school programme that will involve schools in the typically lower-income areas.

Grateful to have their dignity restored, the girls sang in appreciation.
