THE Kotze family from Pretoria came all the way to Port Alfred to treat their mom who wanted nothing more than to see Lionel Hunt perform one more time in remembrance of her son, Anton.
“They were both Elvis fans and the last concert they saw together, before my brother passed away, was Lionel Hunt. So my mom asked us to take her to see Lionel Hunt and we came all the way down from Pretoria to see the show,” said Michael Kotze.
Hunt, not wearing his Elvis outfit, but a great Frank Sinatra fedora, entertained the crowd with songs from the ’50s to the ’90s.
His good friend and musician in her own right, Kerry Hiles, from East London joined him.
“She provides the eye candy,” said a modest Hunt.
In their first set, the duo sang songs like Hurts So Good, 9 to 5, Brown-Eyed Girl and Bad Moon Rising jokingly referred to as Hasie as in “Hasie a bad moon rising”.
Hiles sang Man I Feel Like a Woman and encouraged the audience to join in. “I wanna be free to feel the way I feel,” she sang, but the audience was subdued, apart from the odd brave couple who got up to dance.
After the supper break, things started to cook. The audience were treated to another varied set. Songs like Mustang Sally, Walk of Life, Sweet Caroline, Walking on Sunshine, Rocking All Over the World and Johnny B Goode formed the basis of more crowd pleasers to get the audience rocking.
The music was good and the sound system true, the lighting worked well, and it was a very enjoyable show which everyone in the audience seemed to appreciate.
