Two arrested in Makhanda for drug dealing

Two men are due to appear before the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court on charges of drug dealing and drug possession.

South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy said, “On Monday, April 20, 2026, at approximately 12:55, a coordinated operation involving the Makhanda Crime Intelligence Unit, Makhanda K9 Unit, Makhanda Highway Patrol Unit, and Makhanda Crime Prevention Unit successfully executed a search warrant at a house in Joza, Makhanda.”

At the premises, police had found and confiscated a range of illegal narcotics, including:

· 40.18g of tik (crystal meth)
· 69 mandrax tablets
· 4.51g of heroin rocks
· 10.76g of cocaine
· Eight dagga bompies (cannabis concoctions)

The combined estimated street value of the drugs was approximately R25,000, McCarthy said.

Two male suspects, aged 35 and 44, of Ethiopian nationality, were arrested for drug dealing and drug possession. They are expected to appear in the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court soon, McCarthy said.

The Acting Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Brigadier Asogran Naidoo, commended the members involved for their commitment and dedication to eradicating illicit drugs from communities.

“The confiscation of these drugs has undoubtedly prevented them from reaching our communities and destroying lives. The fight against drugs remains a top priority for the South African Police Service,” Brigadier Naidoo said.
